Vietnamese gender norms collide at City hair show - Ho chi Minh City hair show

Cropped-haired women and long-haired men will be celebrated on June 14 in Ho chi minh city , as an international hair show highlights the latest in unisex styles.
The hair show entitled Ben Khung Cui, Nguoi Dan Ba Det Toc (By the Loom, the Woman Weaves Hair Threads) will bring in top hair stylists from all over the world, and is being put on by the Italian hair product company Davines.

According to Davines Vietnam’s managing director Nguyen Anh Tu, this hair show will stand out from other Davines hair shows by including the skills of stylists from two other brand names: the American company Tigi and the Korean company Create.

“Although each brand has its own style – Davines is elegant while Tigi is dynamic and Create is traditionally Asian – in this year’s show all three brands will focus on a common trend: unisex,” he said.

Nine foreign hair stylists from Italy , the US , the Republic of Korea , Germany , and Chine will present their skills on stage at Hcm city ’s Hoa binh Theatre.

Vietnamese hair stylist Minh Tam will join his foreign colleagues in the show. Tam will present his collection entitled Photo-language, which is, according to him “applicable and expresses the latest trends of Vietnam ’s hair fashion.”

As the only Vietnamese stylist in the show, Tam said he is totally confident sharing the stage with other skillful foreign stylists.

“It can be said I have an advantage over other foreign stylists. I will design creations with a medium very familiar for me: Vietnamese hair,” said Tam, who has been Davines Vietnam ’s master trainer since 2001.

The show’s director Viet Tu has conducted several fashion shows, including the first Davines has show A Feast of Disciples last year.

“The show will be organised as a drama with different characters. The models will act in parts of the play,” said Tu. “They will also dance on a unique and impressive stage designed by the contemporary painter Dinh Cong Dat.”

The hair styles will be complemented with the latest creations designed by Vietnamese model-turned-designer Bui Minh Trang, who graduated from the London Fashion Institute in the UK .

“Keeping with the unisex theme, my collection includes clean-cut and feminine-inspired designs for men, with strong designs for women,” said Trang.

More than 100 male and female models tried out to be one of 60 models in the show.

The show will start at 8 pm.
